IELTS Listening tips to score better in test - Teach5

The Listening test is stressful for many people in comparison to the Reading test. While reading, there is a text in front and a person can see it many times. While you listen, in case you are missing an answer, it disappears because a person only hears the recording for one time and also cannot refer back. Finally, there is a need to prepare the strategies to overcome the challenge.

1 Making notes before listening

There is a situation in which listening to get the answers to a Question, you hear the answer to another Question. This denotes focusing hard on one question and also missing the answers of other questions. In order to avoid such an event, also make a note on a question paper, while listening. Have no worry if these notes are not tidy, but it is important not to remain behind others. There are ten minutes for transferring the answers to the answer sheet and this is the time to be neat.

The Listening test can be divided into two stages. Firstly listen attentively and make all the notes, and secondly transfer the answers to the answer paper

2 Accuracy

A Listening test requires being precise while giving the answers. A suitable example is that when a question asks you regarding completing the phrase ‘at the…’ and the answer is ‘sunset’. While writing on the answer sheet, only “sunset ‘’ is marked as correct. If you add the words like “the sunset” or ‘at the sunset’ you do not score any points.

3 In case of a doubt make a guess

  • Sometimes the candidates are not sure about an answer, and it becomes important to make a guess. The reasons are:
  • There is no loss of points for giving a wrong answer. Hence it is not a risk.
  • Do not leave any spaces because one can write the correct answer where the place is wrong.
  • Finally, ensure that the Test Day is not the day to take the IELTS Listening test first. Practice and Try it out four to five times in advance.

These are some effective tips and you can go ahead to use them to your benefit.
