Discourse markers are an important part revealing the fluency. Through their use, we can assess the coherence of the candidate appearing in the speaking test of IELTS. Additionally, the words and phrases for moving through conversations are called the discourse markers. The idea is very simple because the discourse markers serve for going to one idea from another and also for introducing new topics, to add weight to the talk.

Moreover, the candidates need to know the importance of using a discourse marker. In fact, most of these markers reveal different attitudes towards all new ideas. We look at four discourse markers used by many persons for introducing an opinion. There is a focus to clarify the attitudes behind it.

In my opinion

This phrase introduces an opinion, and also implies that you have the knowledge or expectation that others will disagree with that opinion. There is a need to use this phrase in an appropriate manner. Do not express an opinion where there is nobody to disagree with your statement. The speaker can also use some sentences which compare two objects, persons or writing. You can say that “In my opinion, the USA is greater than the UK”.

To be honest

To be honest

The phrase ‘to be honest’ implies that the speaker puts an emphasis on not lying, but giving a sincere and honest opinion. But there’s more to the phrase; honesty is emphasized when we are in a corner and feel embarrassed.

You can say “I teach Drama, but, to be honest, sometimes I forget the most famous dramatists or their titles. The speaker should not feel embarrassed and not make any attempt to make her embarrassment reasonable.

Other words

The phrase “Frankly speaking” emphasizes telling of the truth. It is a reflection of talking regarding a sensitive issue or matter, but willing to speak in a direct and honest manner.

As far as I’m concerned

This phrase is used for introducing an opinion but also indicates the choice of the speaker. Moreover, the opinion need not be universal but only reflects a choice.

Thus the Discourse markers to conclude play an important role to make our conversation interesting.  We can use plenty of them like So,  Well, Right Anyway, like, right, you know,  Fine, now, I mean, Good, oh, well, as I say, great, okay, mind you, for a start.
