The IELTS British Council Award in Mumbai honoured 10 aspiring Indians with 3, 00, 00 to accomplish their dreams. Although a little early in the day, candidates being selected from varied courses like journalism, law, fine art, international relations and the lack of doctors or Engineers in the awarded list, leads us to believe that India is coming out of its obsolete preferences for these courses. According to Sharon Memis, Director for British Council in West India, the concept was to evolve a group of international citizens who have faith in their abilities to create a better world The champions who belong to different parts of India (Pune, Ahmadabad, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Gurgoan,) are heading towards countries that include Italy, US, Canada, Switzerland. Sarah Deverall, reponsibe for test administration in India says, “The diversity of the winning students wasn’t intentionally programmed into the selection process. They just happened to be the best” Apart from being articulate and zealous about their work, the candidates were of common opinion that it was not difficult to win this test for those who were exposed to usage of English language in their daily lives. The selection process included a minimum scoring of 6.5 on the IELTS, along with written essay on a given topic, followed by interviews and discussions Although the award money covers a small part of their tution fees, the happiness and honour associated with it was incomparable. It made them feel as a class apart. All the winners wanted to come back to India and make an impact here. Looking forward to a luminous future
